Sandstone is one of the most popular decorative gravels because of its lovely shades of brown and red. It is the perfect background for any type of garden, blending well with both deep green foliage and lighter shades.
What is Sandstone?
Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed of mineral and rock particles. It is made primarily of quartz and feldspar, the two most common elements in the earth’s crust. Many hues of sandstone are found in nature including black, brown, tan, yellow, red, pink, grey and white.
Since prehistoric times, sandstone has been a popular building material because it is easy to carve and durable. It was used to make homes, temples, cathedrals and public buildings. It has also been used to make household items such as ancient oil lamps. Compared with other rocks, sandstone is relatively soft, making it easy to carve. Sculptors have used it for statues for centuries and it has also been used for ornamental fountains and other decorative items.
Tips on Using Sandstone
Sandstone is simply gorgeous as a groundcover in any garden and it makes splendid paths as well. Landscape designers love the look of this sedimentary rock.
A weed barrier fabric should be placed under sandstone when you use it as a groundcover. Natural burlap fabric is preferred by many experienced gardeners, since it eventually disintegrates and adds nutrients to the soil. If you prefer a more permanent weed barrier, polythene mesh fabric is a good choice.
Compacting the ground well is the secret to a stable gravel pathway. Mark your pathway with string and stakes, or a rolling paint marker. Excavate two or three inches of soil and then compact the area with a roller or tamper. Place two to three inches of sandstone in the area. Some people like to use weed barrier fabric under pathways, but this fabric is not needed if the area has been treated for weeds and the soil has been well-compacted. Fabric barriers under a pathway can slip and show.
Gravel pathways and groundcovers should be raked regularly to keep them clean. A round-tined rake is perfect for this task.
