Tarmac planings - sometimes called road planings, tar planings or tarmac scalpings - are a useful byproduct of road resurfacing. A cold planer or milling machine scrapes tarmac away from the sub-base and this can then be recycled. Road planings need to cool before being repurposed, but can then become a hardwearing and stable surface for hardstandings such as car parks, footpaths, haul roads, farm tracks and yards. They may also be used as an affordable sub-base in construction and as backfill or void filling material. However, they must not be reheated for health and safety reasons as they may give off toxic fumes.

Whilst it's true that tar planings are a cost-effective and eco-friendly choice for resurfacing large areas, availability is dependent on whether road resurfacing is taking place in the local area, and as such we're not necessarily able to supply tarmac scalpings to our customers throughout the year.

• Perhaps not the most attractive finish so not typically suited to use in domestic gardens or driveways, except as a sub-base.
