Tarmac planings – sometimes called road planings, tar planings or tarmac scalpings – are a useful byproduct of road resurfacing. A cold planer or milling machine scrapes tarmac away from the sub-base and this can then be recycled. Road planings need to cool before being repurposed, but can then become a hardwearing and stable surface for hardstandings such as car parks, footpaths, haul roads, farm tracks and yards. They may also be used as an affordable sub-base in construction and as backfill or void filling material. However, they must not be reheated for health and safety reasons as they may give off toxic fumes.
Whilst it’s true that tar planings are a cost-effective and eco-friendly choice for resurfacing large areas, availability is dependent on whether road resurfacing is taking place in the local area, and as such we’re not necessarily able to supply tarmac scalpings to our customers throughout the year.
Key features
- Scraped from road or pavement sub-base by a cold planing or milling machine.
- Affordable and eco-friendly as bitumen is a natural product and the aggregate has been repurposed.
- Resistant to harsh weather conditions and hardwearing, ideal for high traffic areas.
- Use our tarmac planings to resurface car parks, footpaths, haul roads, farm tracks and yards.
